........

Through this project i have been able to develop many techniques such as pattern cutting. Gaining a better knowledge and understanding of how a garment can be constructed in a more unique way.
I have also been able to develop my research skills. As I feel that throughout this project i have been able to start from one concept BRAILLE and expand it to create new and exciting concepts which have been involved in my design process.

I have really enjoyed being able to work as a group. As this has meant that more ideas have been put forward, meaning that we have been able to included new concepts in our final design, as everyone’s theme is included.

Final Patterns

The image below shows the complete pattern piece for the front of the dress. The overlapping pieces of the pattern which can be seen is the tunnel where the hand travels to lead to the glove, which can be seen through our design.
The below image is the back pattern piece, which has been widened to match the widened front piece. Which is to create volume to the dress once complete.
These are the facings for the neck. The back piece would have to be cut twice so that it can fit around the zip on the back of the dress.
The sleeve pattern piece for our dress has not been changed or made fitted as it will be made of leather so we didn't want it to be to tight on the arm.

Creation Begins - Mock up

When deciding on a design in our group we combined our ideas and developed them into a final design, which was able to show all of our initial thoughts and ideas in a high standard. This can be seen through the post about creating our final design.

CREATING AND EXPERIMENTING WITH OUR DESIGN
Firstly we traced the patterns from the block. We then changed the darts, we slashed and opened our pattern pieces so that we were able widen our front dress piece. Also on the front dress pattern we straightened the side seam so that the dress would not be fitted but instead straight down on the body. We also did this to the back pattern piece so that it was also widened.

CREATING THE TUNNEL- DROP HOLE
The front pattern piece could not be cut on the fold as the two holes, which are going to be used as pockets have different panels so we therefore had to cut the front pattern piece twice.

We then created the 20x20cm square twice and cut out a hole which is big enough for the hand to pass through. This is then pinned onto the front two panel pieces and these are then pinned to a manikin. From each square cut out we drew the lines off each one so that the panel shapes could be created.

We then inserted a paper tube inside the holes, then cut down the down tube following the panel lines on the square. This then created a new pattern piece, which included the tube, which had been inserted, and the front bodice panels.

We then redid the pattern pieces so that they were neat and easier to follow. Once all of the patterns were redrawn we cut out the patterns onto cotton.

When sewing them together care had to be taken as the tubes had to match up for the pockets to fall correctly when the dress was completed.

Group Work

To create our final design we have had to look at all of the groups work and their main concepts.

Leahs work was based around being deaf and sign language. From this hand signals, hands, touch and skin where all main features which could all be included.
From the other group member Neelam her main concpet was lost in translation where things become misunderstood and this could be through not hearing, seeing or feeling things correctly. From her work hand signals had been included in her research.
From all three group members including me, hands and skin where a main concept which all of us had used in our research and our intial designs, and this is why we have decided to make the main feature on our garment the gloves which will be inserted into the pockets and exposed at the bottom of the dress.

To see the work of the rest of my group on their blogs the addresses are:

FINAL DESIGN
This design has been able to combine the work of the whole of our group. The design has been developed until we reached an out come that we were all happy with.

This is the faux white leather which we will be using in our final design for the sleeves and gloves.
Cotton Drill which will be used for the main body of the dress.
For the back zip on the garment we have decided to use a chunky zip which is able to relate to the oversized theme which was one of my concepts. We choose white because it is able to blend in and give a professional finish to the garment.

Final Designs

Once i had completed my initial designs i decided to look at them and choose the elements which i both liked and felt worked the best with the concepts that i have chosen.
When designing my final designs i included these elements whilst also adding and changing things so that they are best suited and related to what i have looked at.

Initial Designs- Inspiration

From the concepts which i have looked into i have be able to develop my ideas into designs. i have used all of my concepts in these first initial designs, i will then develop the designs which i think are the strongest and show the construction of them in more detail.
The texture which is shown in the above designs is mainly influenced from the texture of skin, the wrinkles and creases which are shown, are representing both the ageing of skin and how it can be changed and moved to create new shapes.
I have again looked at skin and how it changes with damage and age, but i have also start to design using the concept of African scarring to the body, which is able to involve new ideas and shapes.

These designs are mainly influenced by the hands as the finger prints have been used and so is the shape of the hands. The pockets which are used in the designs are able to show protection as gloves incorporated into the garment.

Concept Pages

These pages are able to show what i have explored from the idea of braille. From these pages i will be able to further my ideas into the design process. I will use them to look and shapes, colours, textures and construction.

Further Experimentation

By working on the stand i have been able to experiment combining two different fabrics together. When using cotton and paper i feel that the paper was able to draw attention to certain parts of the garment. Also by using two different fabrics i have been able to create different shapes, and also create layers which i could develop further when designing, as this can relate to the layers of skin.

Creating FACIAL Crinkles

To look at the creases and folds that can be created when the face is changed in shape, i have taken some photographs which shows that texture is not only created by ageing skin.

When designing i will be able to look at these images and take parts of the face which will be able to influence my garments. I feel that the four images are able to show very different shapes and also change the structure of the face and this idea could also be shown through design.
PROTECT ME

The above images show the face being hidden and covered by a gloved hand. The protection of the glove is not just of the hand but also the face in these photos, as the eyes are hiden and so are the facial features.
PANELED GLOVE

The above glove is able to show how a glove is created as the panels are visible through the material that is used and the different colours. This idea could be used through design to create a feature through the use of panels to separate a garment.
I like the material that the glove is made from as it is able to create a layer of quilting around the hand. When designing i feel that this material could be used to add emphasis on protection. I also like the material that is used because it is similar to that of a sleeping bag which is able to create a bag effect around the body to protect it.
 SIMPLE

The simple red glove is able to show the simple shape of a glove which then could be developed into a garment. Creating a simple but effective feature.

ME AND MY HANDS
ENTRAPMENT   CLAW   PAIN
FIST   FIGHT   ANGER
DIPS   RIDGES   POOLS
RIPPLES   SPIDER   LENGTH

All of the above images of a hand are able to show how different positions of the hand can create new lines, crinkles and ridges which could all be applied to the design process whether this is through the fabric, technique or how the garment is actually is designed.
